Raising the Roof

A homeowner had started an owner-built project consisting of a garage with a second floor living area.  The first floor was completed and the second floor was framed and roofed when a hard wind caused the second floor walls to collapse.  The homeowner contacted us  to fix the problem.  I decided the best and cheapest way was to lift the roof off of the collapsed walls with a crane, rebuild the walls, and then set the roof back on the building.

The walls were actually framed laying down on the second floor deck and then lifted into place with the crane shortly before the roof was set.  The following pictures show the setting of the walls and roof.

Original Condition

This is how I found the garage, roof collapsed to the 2nd floor level.

Side View showing the stud wall collapsed, accordion style.  Not visible to the right of the picture is a pair of deck columns and a tree.   The roof is resting on these columns and the tree and, without them, would have tipped off the edge of the building.

Standing the Walls

The walls were re-framed laying flat on the 2nd floor deck, and then raised with the crane.

Setting the Roof

The walls were plumbed and braced and then the roof was set with the crane.

Ready for Siding

Here's the finished product after about 3 hours of work. The next step will be the installation of the log cabin style siding.  The short stud wall in the foreground is one of the two support walls that were erected to support the roof in a level manner while it was on the ground being repaired.
